I was amazed to find out that Mark Powell only uses a plain old biro pen to produce these intricate portraits. I remember trying to learn how to draw with a biro in secondary school art class and I found it practically impossible, despite the quality of pen!
Mark takes photograph’s of unsuspecting onlookers, capturing a still moment in his subjects expressions. He then translates these images onto an envelope using his trusty biro. I love the chosen media used in Mark’s work, the dark tones and shadows which the biro creates and the history of an old envelope really help to make his subjects come to life.
You can find more of Mark Powell’s work on his website, I now feel challenged to draw with a biro once again!
